Summer Learning with DSS
Last week I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in the 8th annual Generation Connection (TGC) in Gainesville, Florida. TGC is a one-week travelling day camp that brings together senior citizens and young people (8-12) to engage in a variety of educational, cultural, and sporting activities. The learning experiences ranged from an up-close encounter with water buffaloes to a wonderful tubing experience down the Ichetucknee River. The true power of the camp lies in the unique pairing of young and the old along with the camp's emphasis on educating the campers to think locally and globally about ways to change the world.
Each day at TGC was a true adventure as I worked side by side with the campers to document our amazing excursions through the wilds of North Central Florida. DSS was invited to partner with TGC along with an esteemed team of media educators that included fellow DSS consultant Rhys Daunic and Katherin Garland, UF Doctoral Candidate in Education. Rhys, who is also the founder of The Media Spot which has partnered with TGC for the past 8-years, does an amazing job of weaving in media literacy theory along with teaching the finer elements of video production. In 5-days we were able to work with the campers to produce high-quality storyboards, narratives, documentaries, PSAs and more that not only entertained, but also showcased a wealth of knowledge and experience.
Take a few minutes to watch the "Clips of the Day", read our Tweets, and get up close and personal with TGC campers. This 5-day excurision into the depths of Florida was a life-long learning experience that I will never forget.
